Overview

Obsessive-compulsive disorder involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) performed to reduce the distress they cause.

Common Signs & Symptoms

  • Intrusive, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges
  • Repetitive checking, washing, counting, or ordering
  • Significant time spent on rituals — often more than an hour a day
  • Distress or anxiety if rituals are interrupted
  • Avoidance of triggers for obsessions
  • Awareness that the thoughts or behaviors are excessive, yet feeling unable to stop

When to Seek Help

OCD tends to worsen without treatment. Early, structured intervention leads to much better outcomes.

Our Approach at Shams

We use Exposure and Response Prevention (a specialized form of CBT) as the gold-standard treatment, combined with medication when indicated.
